A. Lange & Söhne Grand Lange 1 Lumen shines bright

The folks at A. Lange & Söhne have prepared an updated version of their Grand Lange 1 timepiece, which itself proved to be quite popular. The Grand Lange 1 Lumen offers the familiar design, completed with a large date display, but this time it’s illuminated, as well as the rest of the indicators. The new model comes in darker edition, distinguishing itself from the rest of the collection. The basic outline of the watch won’t come as a surprise, but its character certainly makes up for it.

The case diameter measures just under 41 mm, and it comes in platinum. At first look, there’s nothing too exciting happening on the watch as a whole, as the shape is pretty much a classic. But the dial certainly gives a lot to be excited about. If you prefer that kind of layout, that is. Just like the Grand Lange 1, the new timepiece features two sub dials: one for hours and minutes and other, smaller one for seconds. Positioned off-center, the sub-dials make for a clear reading and look visually attractive with their rhodiumed hands. The aforementioned date display is at the upper right position, and can be seen even at nighttime, thanks to the luminescent coating behind it.  One more addition to the dial is the power reserve indicator, so you’ll always know how much of the 72 hours of the power reserve you have left to use.

For those who *really* want to know the date at night

Inside, there is a manual Lange manufacture Calibre L095.2. It’s decorated and assembled by hand, with precision having been adjusted in five positions. Plates and bridges are made of untreated German silver, increasing the overall quality of the watch. It possesses shock-resistant screw balance and in-house manufactured balance spring. Users can manipulate the movement through the crown, as well as special push-piece which serves to quickly correct the date. The movement itself can be seen from the back of the watch, but also from the dial, thanks to the sapphire crystal.

Case-back reveals the (pretty) mechanism

But enough with the mechanical intricacies, and let’s get back to the aesthetics. The watch is completed with a black hand-stitched crocodile strap, which suits the watch really well. It has the Lange prong buckle in platinum, nicely matching the platinum of the case. The watch makes for a visually harmonious structure, with its dominant black, but the dial makes things more interesting with its peculiar layout – something that will definitely appeal to those who want “an almost” classic watch, sort to say.

The Grand Lange 1 Lumen will be available in a limited collection of just 200 watches. Not super exclusive, but they will definitely be hard to come by, at least for us mortals. The number of the particular timepiece is indicated on the back, making the watch truly one of a kind. “An almost” classic watch for those who want to be “almost” classic, that’s about it when it comes to Grand Lange 1 Lumen. Oh, and did we mention it shines in dark?
