A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Annual Calendar US boutique edition

Ever since it was first introduced in 2010, the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Annual Calendar has been one of the most sought after calendar watches on the market. With its modest size (given its complexity), intuitive and highly legible dial, and a user-friendly movement, it has set a benchmark in the calendar watch category. Today the German brand is launching a new version of the watch – the Saxonia Annual Calendar US boutique edition (ref. 330.039). Designed exclusively for the American market, this model is issued in a small edition of only 25 pieces. Priced at $54,500, it is only available at the brand’s boutiques in New York, Miami and Costa Mesa.

The first Saxonia model to feature white numerals on the date display

The new A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Annual Calendar US boutique edition differs from the previous models in two small but significant details. The first difference is related to the brand’s signature date display. For the first time in a Saxonia watch, the outsize date features white numerals (black on previous editions). The numerals are placed against a grey background that perfectly matches the color of the dial. The second difference can be spotted by looking through the watch’s transparent case back. In this model, the rotor parts around the gold embossed A. Lange & Söhne logo are plated in black rhodium (usually gold-plated). The black rhodium parts have also been decorated with a circular-grain finish to bring out the contrast between the gold and the rhodium. No other A. Lange & Söhne watch features such an oscillating rotor.

For an annual calendar, the new Saxonia Annual Calendar US boutique edition is actually on the smaller side. The 38.5mm diameter and the thickness of only 9.8mm make this watch a great choice for both men and women. The case itself is made of white gold and can withstand depths of up to 30 meters. On the back of the watch there is a transparent sapphire case back revealing the beautifully finished movement. The decoration includes German silver plates and bridges, blued screws, and a hand-engraved balance cock.

Underneath the front sapphire crystal we have a clear and highly legible grey dial. In addition to hours and minutes, the dial also displays date at 12, date at 3, day of the week at 9, and small seconds and moon phase in a combined counter at 6 o’clock. The months are correctly displayed from March to January, while the date must only be adjusted once a year when February transitions into March. The moon phase only needs to be corrected by one day every 122.6 years.

Although packed with information, the dial is very clear and legible

Inside the new Saxonia Annual Calendar US boutique edition is the calibre L085.1 with 43 jewels. Comprised of 476 components, this self-winding movement beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 46 hours. The movement features the brand’s patented zero-reset function which, when the crown is pulled, stops the movement and causes the second hand to jump to zero. This allows for more accurate adjustment of the time. Completing the watch is a shiny blue alligator strap with white gold prong buckle.
