Richemont, the Swiss giant behind brands like A. Lange & Söhne, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Vacheron Constantin and Piaget, has recently announced the launching of a new entry-level watch brand called Baume. A subsidiary of Baume & Mercier, Baume will operate independently as an e-commerce only company. Drawing experience from Richemont Group’s horological expertise, the company produces innovative, quality timepieces that challenge the conventions of traditional watchmaking. Their watches are designed in Geneva, Switzerland, and assembled at a Richemont facility in the Netherlands.

Baume creates modern watches in sustainable, considered materials. The company uses natural or recycled materials to reduce waste. The cases are made of stainless steel or aluminum while the straps include materials like alcantara, cork, cotton, linen, and even recycled PET. The cardboard used for the packaging FSC-certified (Forest Stewardship Council) and can be reused or recycled into paper. When Baume produces timepieces, any unused parts are recycled or re-used. The customers will be available to return their Baume watch at the end of its life, enabling the company to recycle the parts. By taking this sustainable approach, the Swiss brand shows its dedication towards a better tomorrow.

Another important aspect of the company’s philosophy is customization. Within the Custom Timepieces Edition collection, the brand offers its customers a unique opportunity to design their own Baume watch. Via an online configurator customers can choose between 4 basic models: 35mm moonphase, 41mm retrograde, 35mm small seconds and 41mm small seconds. The watches are thoughtfully designed in both material choices and production techniques, and fully customizable to suit any style. The configurator offers more than 2000 different possibilities for personalization, including case material, dial color, hands, straps, and even engraving on the case back. Minimalist in design, the timepieces are all characterized by articulated lugs that conform to any wrist, and a 12 o’clock crown – a nod to the first pocket watches produced by Baume & Mercier. Priced between $560 and $630, the watches are all quartz powered. The movements are supplied by Miyota and Ronda.

In addition to the Custom Timepieces Edition pieces, Baume has also released a single model called the Iconic. Inspired by Mother Nature, this watch is housed in a 41mm recycled, recyclable aluminum case. The Iconic is water resistant to 30 meters and features a transparent sapphire case back. The silver dial features a sun-satin finish and white indexes. The minutes are indicated by a central hand while the hours are shown via a 24-hour ring at 6 o’clock. At 2 o’clock there is a small seconds counter. In the centre of the dial there is an opening revealing some of the movement’s architecture. Ticking inside the new Baume Iconic is the Miyota 82D7 with 21 jewels. This self-winding movement operates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. Completing the watch we have a black recycled PET strap secured with an aluminium buckle. The Iconic retails for $1,100.
