Baume & Mercier Clifton Club Burt Munro Tribute Limited Edition

Earlier this year, Swiss watchmaker Baume & Mercier announced the start of a collaboration with iconic American motorcycle manufacturer, Indian Motorcycle. To celebrate this new partnership, Baume & Mercier is launching a special limited edition watch – the Clifton Club Burt Munro Tribute. Issued as a limited edition of 1,967 pieces, the timepiece celebrates the 50th anniversary of the year in which Burt Munro set an AMA (American Motorcycle Association) national land-speed record for motorcycles under 1000cc. He was driving, you’ve guessed it, an Indian motorcycle :) .

Herbert James “Burt” Munro (1899-1978) was a New Zealand motorcycle racer. In 1926, the legendary Kiwi bought a 1920 Indian Scout bike. However he was not satisfied with the bike’s original maximum speed of 55 mph (89 km/h) and decided to start modifying it. Munro spent the next 40 years on this project. The modified motorcycle had an engine of 950cc (originally 600cc) and featured a red aerodynamic shell (a streamliner) with the black and yellow race number 35 on it. In 1967, he took it to the Bonneville Salt flats where he achieved the top speed of 184.087 mph (296.11 km/h) – a record that still stands today. This incredible achievement was dramatized in the 2005 movie The World’s Fastest Indian. In this film, Burt Munro was portrayed by the great Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Now onto the watch itself. The new Baume & Mercier Clifton Club Burt Munro Tribute Limited Edition is housed in a 44mm stainless steel case. Water resistant to 50 meters, the case features a bezel with a tachymeter scale. On the tachymeter scale, the number 184 is highlighted. On the back of the watch we have a solid stainless steel caseback engraved with the Indian Motorcycle Headdress logo, as well as the limited edition number. Founded in 1901, the Indian Motorcycle is America’s motorcycle company.

Underneath the AR-coated sapphire crystal lies a silver-colored dial with black rhodium-plated hour markers and leaf hands. Both the markers and hands are filled with green Super-LumiNova. The dial’s beautiful sandblasted finish recalls the surface of the Bonneville Salt Flats. The dial displays hours, minutes, small seconds at 9, central chronograph seconds, and 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters at 12 and 6 o’clock respectively. Positioned at 6, the date window is inside the 12-hour chronograph counter. Inside the small seconds counter is the large yellow number 35. The chronograph seconds hand features a highly stylized cursive “I” counterweight – a nod to the “I” in the Indian Motorcycle logo.

Inside the latest Baume & Mercier timepiece is the Swiss-made ETA Valjoux 7750. Featuring 25 jewels, this self-winding movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. Priced at $3,750, the new Baume & Mercier Clifton Club Burt Munro Tribute Limited Edition is presented on a stylish red calfskin strap. This particular color is referred to as the “Indian Red”, a shade found on many Indian motorcycles.
