Limited to 100 pieces, this special edition pays tribute to legendary RAF pilot Alan Christopher “Al” Deere. What makes the new Christopher Ward C8 ‘Al Deere’ TM-B Limited Edition particularly interesting is its exhibition case back. Underneath the museum-grade sapphire crystal there is an aluminum disc originating from the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine fitted to Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1 X4276 – an aircraft flown by Lieutenant “Al” Deere. The plane crashed on December 28 1940, after a mid-air collision during a training exercise. Before the take-off, the New Zealand pilot told trainee Sergeant Harry Squire to fly as close as possible to him. Squire, who was flying in another airplane, took the “stick to me like glue” instruction a bit too literally, causing a mid-air collision with Deer’s airplane. Both pilots survived the crash. Excavated in 1987, the wreckage of the X4276 has been obtained by Christopher Ward’s long-time partner TMB Art Metal. The aluminum disc featured on the case back is engraved with Deere’s message, his airplane’s identification code, squadron letters and crash date.

The Christopher Ward C8 ‘Al Deere’ TM-B Limited Edition is housed in a 44mm black DLC stainless steel case. The case is water resistant to 50 meters (5 ATM) and has a sandblasted crown embossed with an image of the Farnborough wind tunnels – a facility where Spitfire airplanes were tested. Each case is engraved with a unique serial number. Inspired by the Smiths Mk III clock found in Deere’s airplane, the watch’s black dial is characterized by vintage-looking Old Radium Super-LumiNova Arabic numerals. Located at 6 o’clock, the small seconds counter is adorned with Mk III’s trademark “time of trip” message.
