Cool Hand Brooklyn – a modified Rolex Daytona designed by Spike Lee

Cool Hand Brooklyn 3

Located in Geneva, Switzerland, Les Artisans de Genève is a watchmaking company that specializes in customizing timepieces from renowned brands. Their latest creation is called the Cool Hand Brooklyn and it is based on the legendary Rolex Daytona, more precisely the reference 116520 which was produced between 2000 and 2016. What makes the Cool Hand Brooklyn even more special (or cooler if you will :) ) is that it is designed by none other than film icon Spike Lee!

So how did Les Artisans de Genève and Spike Lee end up working together? One day, while at the Apple Store In SoHo, New York, the movie director was approached by Les Artisans de Genève CEO John Isaac with an idea of creating a collaborative timepiece. As an owner of several Rolex Daytona watches and big fan of the late Paul Newman, Spike Lee was more than happy to participate. The 1967 movie “Cool Hand Luke”, starring Paul Newman, is one of Spike Lee’s favorite films of all time. Combine this with the fact that the director’s home town is Brooklyn, and you get the idea why the watch is named Cool Hand Brooklyn :) .

In his 2002 movie 25th Hour, Spike Lee paid an homage to Paul Newman by putting the poster of Cool Hand Luke in the apartment of Edward Norton’s character. Mr. Newman personally signed the poster

An homage to both Paul Newman and the city of New York, the new Cool Hand Brooklyn features a bold blue and orange color scheme – a nod to the colors of NYC and the New York Knicks, Spike Lee’s favorite basketball team. For this watch, Les Artisans de Genève has created a unique navy blue color called the “Blee SPZK” blue. The case of the Rolex Daytona 116520 has been hand-modified to give it the style of the 1970’s models. As a result, the Cool Hand Brooklyn has a bit thinner lugs and it does not feature crown guards. Using authentic 1950’s machines, the Geneva-based company has replaced the current Rolex Daytona bezel with a blue Bakelite bezel featuring an orange “Units Per Hour” marking at three o’clock. The back of the case has also been modified, and instead of a solid case back, the Cool Hand Brooklyn has a large sapphire window.

The new Cool Hand Brooklyn features a sunburst-finished blue dial with orange markers and hands. Inspired by the iconic reference 6263, the dial displays hours, minutes, central chronograph seconds, small seconds at 6, 30-minute chronograph counter at 3, and 12-hour chronograph counter at 9 o’clock. The hands have been individually hand-refined to have the characteristic look of the vintage watches. The dial also features an arched “Brooklyn” signature above the small seconds at 6 o’clock.

Housed in a familiar 40mm stainless steel case, the Cool Hand Brooklyn is limited to only 40 pieces. The watch is powered by the well known caliber 4130 – a 4Hz self-winding movement with a power reserve of approximately 72 hours. The caliber 4130 has been slightly modified and now features a large 22K gold rotor that has been coated with “Blee SPZK” blue and engraved in orange. Priced at $39,800, the watch comes on a stylish blue alligator leather strap. Each piece in the limited edition is made upon request.
