Continuing its “Hublot loves Art” campaign, the Swiss watchmaker has announced a new partnership with renowned contemporary artist Shepard Fairey. Born in 1970, Shepard Fairey is an American street artist, graphic designer, activist, illustrator and founder of OBEY Clothing. His art can be found throughout Los Angeles and in many cities around the world. His works are featured in permanent collections of many internationally renowned museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art, the Victoria and Albert and many others. In 2008, the artist became globally recognized for his Barack Obama “Hope” poster which became an iconic representation of the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign. Last year, streaming service Hulu released a documentary about his life called Obey Giant.

Hublot announced Shepard Fairey as its newest brand ambassador at a special even held on May 16 at the Mack Sennett Studios in Los Angeles. For this occasion, the facade of the historic movie studio was decorated with a large mural entitled, “American Dreamers” which was painted by Shepard Fairey and his colleague, Portuguese graffiti/street artist Vhils. The event saw the attendance of many celebrities and friends of the brand including, rock band Franz Ferdinand, actor Joel McHale, Spanish artist Okuda and many more. During the evening, Hublot unveiled a an exclusive new watch – the Big Bang Meca-10 Shepard Fairey. Designed in collaboration with the American artist, the timepiece comes in two versions: Fairey Grey (ref. 414.YF.1137.VR.SHF18) and Fairey Blue (414.YL.5179.VR.SHF18). Each model is limited to only 100 pieces. The watches will be available from July and will retail for $28,300 each.

The new Hublot Big Bang Meca-10 Shepard Fairey models both feature a large 45mm case made of Carbon Fiber and Texalium. The watches are water resistant to 100 meters and feature sapphire case backs engraved with limited edition number. The case and bezel of each model are decorated with a miniature “mural” designed by Shepard Fairey. The same floral pattern is also used for embossing the straps. Underneath the front sapphire glass lies a mat black/mat blue skeleton dial with red and blue accents respectively. The dial displays hours, minutes, small seconds at 9, and power reserve at 6 o’clock. At 3 o’clock there is a plate decorated with Shepard Fairey’s “STAR GEAR” logo. The plate also features an opening which unveils a red dot when the power reserve is low.

The floral pattern used for the case and strap mimics the artist’s work


Powering the new Big Bang Meca-10 Shepard Fairey watches is the Caliber Hublot HUB1201 with 24 jewels. Comprised of 223 components, this manually-wound skeleton works at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and has a power reserve of 10 days when fully wound. The blue model is fitted on a black rubber/blue calf strap while the grey version features black rubber/grey calf strap. Each timepiece comes in a special presentation box containing a signed and numbered letterpress print “Star Gear Collage Red” or “Star Gear Collage Blue” by the artist, framed in concrete.
