Insight Micro-Rotor Lady – Romain Gauthier’s first ladies’ watch

This year’s SIHH will see the debut appearance of six brands including the young independent watchmaker Romain Gauthier. For the upcoming Geneva trade show, the Swiss company has prepared its firs ladies’ timepiece – the Insight Micro-Rotor Lady. For their first feminine piece, the brand didn’t want to go traditional and make a “standard” quartz watch with diamonds. Instead they opted for a more modern approach and produced a watch timepiece that’s more than just a “pretty face”. With its mesmerizing mother of pearl dial and intricately engineered, automatic movement, the new Insight Micro-Rotor Lady offers a combination of style and substance.

Each edition is limited to only 10 pieces

According to the brand’s founder, this was done because today female collectors are increasingly looking to own truly exceptional mechanical watches. He also added that while aesthetics still play an important factor, female collectors want “the real deal” in terms of hand-finishing and innovative mechanisms. With its latest creation, Mr. Gauthier wanted to make a timepiece that is elegant and feminine, but which avoids clichés of femininity. The Insight Micro-Rotor Lady is a highly technical watch where the showpiece complication provides a simplicity of use. All it takes is to turn the crown a few times, set the time, put the watch on your wrist and let the micro-rotor do the rest :) .

The crown is intentionally placed at 2 o’clock to free up space for wrist movement

An elegant and reliable daily companion, the Romain Gauthier Insight Micro-Rotor Lady comes in two models: one with Tahitian black mother-of-pearl dial and anthracite strap, and the other with a Australian extra white mother-of-pearl dial and white strap. Each edition is limited to 10 pieces. On both versions, the two subdials are made from the same 0.3mm thin piece of mother of pearl, while the mainplate cover (also cut from the same piece of mother of pearl) is slightly thicker at 0.6mm. Cutting the nacre was challenging because of the fragile nature of the material. Each piece of mother of pearl comes from its natural environment in the South Seas and is ecologically sourced.

The bidirectional micro-rotor turns between two bridges, each fitted with a wear-resistant ruby bearing

The new Romain Gauthier Insight Micro-Rotor Lady watches both have a 39.5mm red gold case. Kind-of large for a ladies’ watch, but then again, this isn’t a typical feminine piece :) . The case is water resistant to 50 meters and has a transparent sapphire caseback. The crown is intentionally placed at 2 o’clock to free up space for wrist movement. The dial layout is the same on both models and includes off-centre hours and minutes at 12, central small seconds, balance wheel at 6, and a 22k gold bidirectional micro rotor at 9 o’clock. Framed by a cut-out in the mainplate, the oscillating weight has its front decorated with brilliant-cut diamonds of varying sizes.

The movement offers a generous power reserve of 80 hours

Designed, developed and produced at the brand’s manufacture in the Vallée de Joux, the self-winding caliber has been designed to be highly visible (hence the “Insight” in the watch’s name) so the wearer can admire its remarkable mechanics and fine finishing. The movement itself oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a substantial power reserve of 80 hours. Priced at CHF 83,000, each Insight Micro-Rotor Lady model is available with a rubber or satin strap.
