Introducing: the 2018 Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda 1950 Squelette

Named after the Italian word for “round”, the Tonda range is the largest of all Parmigiani Fleurier collections. One of the most notable models in the series is the Tonda 1950. The “1950” in the name is a reference to the birth year of the brand’s founder Michel Parmigiani. Introduced for 2011, it is the brand’s first ultra-slim timepiece. Today the company is proud to announce a new version of this exceptional watch – the Tonda 1950 Squelette (ref. PFC289-0002801-XA1442). This is the second time Parmigiani Fleurier has skeletonized the Tonda 1950. The first Tonda 1950 Squelette was introduced back in 2015.

For this model, the Swiss watchmaker has developed a brand new movement – the calibre PF707. A product of three years of research and development, this ultra-thin automatic movement features improved precision, reliability and shock resistance. The main problem the designers faced was how to incorporate the oscillating weight into the movement itself without increasing its thickness. The solution was to make it from platinum, to ensure inertia, and incorporate it directly into the main plate. Thanks to this off-centre rotor, the calibre PF707 is only 2.6 mm thick The movement itself beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 48 hours.

Successfully skeletonising an ultra-thin movement is not an easy task at all and requires highly skilled craftsmanship. This complicated and time-consuming process reveals all the refinement of the movement, from the complexity of its mechanism to the beauty of each decoration. It requires a perfect balance between laying the caliber bare and retaining the rigidity of each part. The main plate and bridges have been maximally skeletonized, retaining only the essentials the movement needs to operate. The barrel has also been skeletonized, allowing the wearer to see the winding spring. Visible through the transparent case back, the oscillating weight is engraved with a decorative “barley grain” pattern.

The only thing that obstructs the view of the skeletonised movement is the rose gold metal flange

Boasting a timeless elegance, the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda 1950 Squelette is housed in a polished stainless steel case. Water resistant to 30 meters, the case is 40mm wide and only 8.2mm thick. The case, with its four teardrop-shaped lugs fit the wrist perfectly. The watch has a sapphire dial with luminous rose gold delta-shaped hands. Running around its edge is a rose gold metal flange displaying the minute track and indices. The back of the flange has delicate, detailed engraving with fine, elegant concentric snailing decorating its surface. The sophisticated dial is composed of several layers. This creates a captivating 3D effect which reflects light and draws in the gaze.
