The 2018 is of great significance for Jaquet Droz as it marks the brand’s 280th anniversary! The Swiss watchmaker has been celebrating its anniversary all year with various events and exhibitions, as well as by introducing special new models. The latest such timepiece is called the Petite Heure Minute Smalta Clara. Available in rose gold and white gold, the watch is now available at Jaquet Droz’s boutiques and official retailers. Limited to 28 pieces, each version retails for CHF 52,000.

Featuring beautiful enamel dials, the new Petite Heure Minute Smalta Clara watches mark a new chapter in the long tradition of the Ateliers d’Art at Jaquet Droz. For the first time in its history, the brand has used the enameling technique called plique-à-jour (French for “letting in daylight”). Also known as smalta clara (Latin for “clear enamel”), this highly demanding technique requires a rare level of skill to prevent the enamel from cracking in the kiln. With every firing of the piece, the risk of cracking becomes more possible. The dial decorations are not made of a single piece of enamel, but rather of cells of different colors and shapes. The cells are separated by white gold wire cloisons. Since there is no metal backing and the watches don’t have solid case backs, the light can freely shine through the enamel, illuminating every color and hue.

Both Petite Heure Minute Smalta Clara models feature a beautiful enamel motif of a roaring tiger. Designed exclusively by Jaquet Droz for this watch, the animal is depicted in vivid, modern strokes, adding a strong personality to this feminine piece. On the white gold version, the tiger is shining in hues of blue while on the red gold model it features gold and brown tones. Each motif has seven different colors and required four full days to be completed. In the addition to the enamel decorations, the dials also feature off-centered hour displays at 2 o’clock. Jaquet Droz has intentionally made them small so that they don’t “steal the show” from the tiger. The white mother-of-pearl subdials feature two blued steel (white gold model) or rose gold hands (rose gold model).

The new Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Smalta Clara watches are both 35mm wide and water resistant to 30 meters. Each case has a bezel decorated with 100 diamonds and winding crown positioned at 2 o’clock. The latter was done to make the winding-shaft as discreet as possible through the enamel. The timepieces are both powered by the caliber 6150 – the brand’s smallest mechanical movement. Borrowed from the Lady 8 Flower watch, this self-winding movement features silicon balance spring and pallet horns and platinum oscillating weight with white/red gold applique. The movement itself beats at a frequency of 21.600 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. Completing each watch is a stylish rolled-edge hand-made satin strap: blue for the white gold watch and brown for the red gold model.
