With a population of roughly 300,000 people, Iceland is the smallest ever nation to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. The upcoming tournament in Russia (14 June to 15 July 2018) will also be the first for this Nordic island country. To celebrate this great achievement JS Watch Co., the first and only Icelandic watch manufacturer, is releasing a special dedicated edition – the World Cup MMXVIII Limited Edition. Limited to 300 numbered pieces, the watch will be available from May 2018. The first 30 editions have been reserved for the members of the Iceland’s men’s national football team. The rest of the models can be pre-ordered now at a price of €3,220 each.

The idea for this project came from the captain of the national team Aron Gunnarsson who visited JS Watch Co., expressing his and his teammates’ interesting in creating a special Iceland football-themed watch. Together with the brand’s master watchmaker Gilbert and his son Sigurdur, he laid down some ideas for the design of the timepiece. Two ideas on which they all agreed on were: using the national colors of the Icelandic flag and adding some small details to reflect the spirit that has built up around the national team.

The watch revolves around two main themes: the use of the colors of the Icelandic flag and the addition of few small details that reflect the spirit that has built up around the national team

The JS Watch Co. World Cup MMXVIII Limited Edition features a galvanic silver dial with 11 numerals in silver and number 12 in red. The former represents the national team’s starting lineup while the latter symbolizes the Icelandic fans who are considered to be the 12th player in the team. At 6 o’clock there is an inscription “Fyrir Ísland” which, when translated to English, means “For Iceland”. The minutes from 0 to 45 are in blue while the rest of the minute track is in red. Instead of numerals 50 and 55, there are “half” and “time” respectively – a detail originating clock that was located on the National stadium “Laugardalsvöllur” and also “Melavöllur” where Master Watchmaker Gilbert played football ( I mean soccer :) ) with his team Fylkir back in the day. Another interesting detail is the World Cup MMXVIII logo. Located above the 6 o’clock marker, it features a reversed R (Я) – a nod to the host of the next FIFA World Cup. Completing the dial we have the blued second hand shaped like a Viking spear.

Distinctive details can also be found on the watch’s stainless steel case. Measuring 43.3mm in diameter, it features a case back ring engraved with JS Watch Co. Reykjavik, World Cup MMXVIII, and “VAR ÞAÐ EKKI” – a celebration chant the team whispers in the locker room after victories. At 3 o’clock, the crown is engraved with a small soccer ball. The ball is filled with blue ceramic. Each case is individually numbered between the lugs.
