Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III 1

Since 1953 and the introduction of the iconic Fifty Fathoms diving watch, Blancpain has had a strong connection with the world of diving. For more than 60 years now, the Swiss watchmaker has been helping to raise awareness through ocean exploration. The brand strongly supports major scientific expeditions such as the Gombessa Project and the Pristine Seas expeditions. Each year, Blancpain releases Edition Fifty Fathoms, a book dedicated to the sea world and characterized by the quality of its underwater photographs in an effort to increase people’s knowledge of and concern about the ocean. In 2014 the company introduced its first series of limited edition Blancpain Ocean Commitment timepieces. Following the success of the first model and the second in 2016, Blancpain is now releasing the third limited edition series of these watches – the Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III (ref. 5008-11B40-52A).

Limited to 250 pieces, the Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III is design-wise similar to the original 1953 Fifty Fathoms. The timepiece is housed in a 40mm satin-brushed stainless steel, a diameter reserved for limited-edition Fifty Fathoms watches. It is water resistant to 300 meters and has a transparent sapphire case back. Like a true diving piece, the Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III is equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel. Blue in color as a nod to the sea, the latter is topped by a scratch-resistant sapphire ring, an ingenious feature introduced by Blancpain back in 2003. Also in blue, the dial displays hours, minutes, seconds and date between 4 and 5 o’clock. The dial’s markings and hands, as well as the bezel’s indexes are all coated with luminous material. Completing the dial is the Blancpain Ocean Commitment logo at 6 o’clock.

Design-wise, the watch is very similar to the original 1953 Fifty Fathoms

Powering the new Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III is the in-house developed and manufactured calibre 1151 with 28 jewels. Comprised of 210 components, this reliable and robust self-winding movement features a silicon hairspring, material insensitive to magnetic fields. Thanks to this technical solution, there is no need for the watch to use an inner soft iron case. Visible through the transparent case back, the calibre 1151 is decorated with Geneva waves and has a NAC-finished gold oscillating weight engraved with “Ocean Commitment”. The movement itself beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of no less than 96 hours.

By purchasing one of the 250 watches, each buyer contributes to Blancpain’s participation in the cause of ocean protection. The Swiss brand will donate €1,000 for the sale of each watch. Each customer will receive a corresponding hand-numbered copy of the Edition Fifty Fathoms book, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The purchase of the watch will also entitle the owner to join the Blancpain Ocean Commitment Circle, giving him/her access to exclusive private events and conferences regarding ongoing scientific expeditions financed by Blancpain.
