Happy New year and all the best for 2018! :) In this article we bring you a cool new Seiko Prospex collection – the Black Series limited edition. The collection features three affordable dive watches: the SRPC49K1, the SSC673P1, and the SNE493P1. The latest Seiko Prospex timepieces are expected to be released somewhere in the first quarter of 2018. Each model will be issued as a limited edition, though the Japanese brand is yet to confirm the exact details.

All three models are priced under $500

According to Seiko, the new Prospex Black Series dive watches are inspired by the breathtaking world of night diving. At night, the marine world becomes dark and mysterious, making the adventure of night diving highly alluring. Even if one has dived at a site before, they may still experience a whole new world when descending into the water at night. Featuring hard black-coated stainless steel cases, the new Black Series pieces reflect the darkness of the deep sea. Highly robust, the watches are designed and made to withstand depths of up to 200 meters. The crowns have screw-down protection to prevent any accidental operation. Each case is also equipped with a screw case back and an unidirectional rotating bezel that prevents any accidental rotation.

Like true diving watches, the latest Prospex Black Series models are manufactured to achieve maximum legibility. The black dials are highly readable, even deep in the ocean where sunlight does not penetrate. The tan hour markers, as well as the hour and minutes hands (white and orange respectively) are all coated with Seiko’s proprietary LumiBrite – a luminous paint that is brighter and longer-lasting than conventional luminous materials.

Measuring 45mm in diameter, the reference SRPC49K1 is the only watch in the collection to feature an automatic movement. The timepiece is powered by the caliber 4R36. This self-winding mechanical movement beats at a frequency of 3Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour) and offers a power reserve of approximately 41 hours. Underneath the Hardlex crystal glass, the dial displays hours, minutes, seconds and day and date in a window at 3 o’clock. Priced at €490, the reference SRPC49K1 (like all Prospex Black Series models) comes on a sporty black silicon rubber strap.

Next we have the two solar-powered watches: the references SNE493P1 and SSC673P1. In these models, the light energy is received by a solar cell (positioned under the dial) and then converted into electrical energy. This electricity is stored in the rechargeable battery and is used to move the timepiece. Both watches are powered by the caliber V157. The reference SNE493P1 displays hours, minutes, seconds and date at 3 o’clock. The magnifying lens allows easy and straightforward reading of the date. In this model, the movement has a power reserve of approximately 10 months. The SSC673P1 is a chronograph that displays small seconds at 9, 60-minute and 24-hour chronograph counters at 6 and 3 respectively, and date window between 4 and 5 o’clock. Because of the additional functions, the caliber V157 here has a smaller power reserve of six months. The reference SNE493P1 is priced at €380 while the SSC673P1 will retail at €410.
