Laurent Ferrier Galet Minute Repeater School Piece

The Montre Ecole or “School Piece” is Laurent Ferrier’s very first watch creation. Inspired by traditional 19th-century pocket watches, it was the timepiece he completed in order to graduate as a watchmaker in 1968. Since he started his own brand in 2010, Laurent Ferrier used this piece as an inspiration for many of his creations. The latest watch based on this historic pocket watch is the Galet Minute Repeater School Piece (ref. LCF.030) – Laurent Ferrier’s first repeater watch. The brand has announced that only five models will be produced over the next two years. The price is yet to be announced.

The brand’s first repeater watch

Obviously, the most striking (no pun intended :) ) feature of the new Laurent Ferrier Galet Minute Repeater School Piece is its minute repeater complication. The striking mechanism itself is triggered by a sliding bolt built into the left side of the case. On demand, two small hammers hit two differently tuned gongs to sound the hours, quarters and minutes. The watch strikes a low-pitched note for each hour, double high- and low-pitched note for the quarters, and a high-pitched note for every minute that has passed since the last quarter. The position and weight of each hammer is perfectly adjusted to the corresponding gong. The calibration was done using a xylophone: D sharp for the hours, F sharp for the minutes, together sounding a major third interval. To enjoy in an optimal listening experience, the Swiss brand recommends laying the watch flat to provide a soundboard effect and enable the chiming mechanism to work its magic. The chime lasts is 17 seconds for the longest indications.

To ensure that the chiming sound is clear and beautifully balanced, Laurent Ferrier equipped the new Galet Minute Repeater School Piece with a steel case. For the same reason, the company decided to make the watch non water resistant. The caliber inside the timepiece is a classically designed movement with a Swiss lever escapement and traditional materials. The mechanism features several signature Laurent Ferrier details such as a distinctively shaped balance-wheel, a winding pawl with a long blade and finely cut bridges. The hammers are aligned on a bridge featuring distinctive interior angles. The exquisite finishing of the movement can be admired through the sapphire case back.
