Laurent Ferrier Galet Square Porcelain Limited Edition

Established in 2008, Laurent Ferrier is a young brand dedicated to traditional mechanical watchmaking. Inspired by Haute Horlogerie traditions, their timepieces feature a classic design infused with a resolutely contemporary touch. In the last almost 10 years, the independent Swiss  watchmaker has managed to develop a distinctive elegant style that escapes the reach of time. In 2015, Laurent Ferrier has enriched this style by introducing a new cushion-shaped case. Described as  hunter-, cushion- or tonneau-shaped models, the watches from the Square range are distinguished by their square profile and pocket watch-inspired dial. Today the independent brand is proud to announce a new Square model – the Galet Square Porcelain Limited Edition. Issued as a limited edition of only 10 pieces, the new timepiece is now available at authorized Laurent Ferrier stores worldwide. The watch retails at $64,000.

To make the dials for its watches, Laurent Ferrier has so far used various materials such as gold, brass, silver, opaline, and, for some models, even grand feu enamel. Now, for the first time, the brand is using porcelain. Of course, making a porcelain dial is no easy task, as it requires an extremely complex technical process. A true technical challenge, the process begins with hand-shaping porcelain discs from a kaolin-based substance. After being modeled and fired at the temperature of 1400°C/2550°F, the exquisite porcelain is then coated with a layer of transparent enamel that gives it a beautiful glossy effect. The porcelain discs must be perfectly made to ensure a perfect fit inside the watch case.

The first Laurent Ferrier watch to feature a porcelain dial

The new Laurent Ferrier Galet Square Porcelain Limited Edition features a mesmerizing white porcelain dial. The brand’s watches usually feature dials with applied indexes or Roman numerals, but here this is not the case. Instead we have ten anthracite Breguet type Arabic numerals and one additional, at 12, painted in scarlet red. Running around the edge of the dial is a minute track with gold circular minute dots for the minutes, four diamond-shape gold markers at 3, 6, 9 and 12, and smaller diamond-shape gold patterns for the tenths. The dial also features black ruthenium-treated white gold hands: “assegai-shaped” for the hours and minutes baton-shaped for the small seconds at 6 o’clock.

Powering the watch is the caliber FBN 229.01 with 35 jewels. Developed, assembled and adjusted in the brand’s workshops, this self-winding movement features silicon escapement. Visible through the transparent caseback, it is also features extraordinary finishing, including Geneva waves on the bridges and circular graining on the mainplate. The movement itself beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours.
