On February 9 2017 it was announced that the Swiss watchmaker Longines will be the Official Timekeeper of the upcoming 2018 Commonwealth Games. The XXI Commonwealth Games will be held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia between 4 and 15 April 2018, and will welcome more than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 Commonwealth nations and territories. For the very first time, an equal number of men’s and women’s medal events will be contested. Over 200 Longines technicians will be working on providing timing, scoring and result services for each of the 18 sport events. Longines’ experience and excellence in precision timing will be critical to delivering one of the most iconic sporting events in the world. The winged hourglass brand has been a long-time supporter of the Commonwealth Games movement having delivered timing services to the 1962 and 2014 Commonwealth Games.

In honor of the upcoming XXI Commonwealth Games, Longines has launched a special dedicated edition: the Conquest V.H.P. Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (ref. L3.726.4.99.6). With its latest timepiece, the Swiss brand is once again returning to a technology in which it was a pioneer and expert. In 1984, the Saint-Imier based company introduced the Conquest V.H.P. which achieved a new record for precision. Its quartz movement had a tolerance of ± 1 minute every 5 years, making it 5 to 10 times more accurate than any quartz watch at the time. The Conquest V.H.P. Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games is even more precise as its quartz caliber has a tolerance of just ± 5 seconds a year! The new movement is also renowned for its ability to reset its hands after an impact or exposure to a magnetic field, using the GPD (gear position detection) system.
