Here at WatchAllure we just can’t get enough of beautiful luxury timepieces with breathtaking decorations and amazing technology that pushes the watch industry forward. However, with all that luxury and innovation comes inevitably a high price tag – a big ‘no-no’ for a limited budget. So this time let’s take a look at more simple and basic horological solutions – the watches from the Japanese retail company Muji.
Don’t get me wrong – I’m not trying to sound condescending. After all, who doesn’t like a good deal on anything? Simple and inexpensive doesn’t necessarily translate into ‘low quality’, and once you’ve seen these watches, you’ll understand why that’s the case. Muji places great importance on producing high quality goods, but manages to achieve lower price by spending little on advertising and product packaging, the core principles of their ‘no-brand’ strategy. Their watches feature a distinct minimalist design paired with quality materials, available at very affordable prices. The timepieces are just a part of their 7,000 household and consumer products which are available in an increasing number of countries.
Off to the watches then – if you’re looking for a truly classic look, the Round Face watch will not let you down. This unisex timepiece comes in a 33 mm case and features a dial that might not impress you, but it sure looks very neat! The design of the dial, namely the numerals and indexes, resembles something you might find on a retro clock, and the black and white color scheme just further emphasizes that. Simple black strap completes this timepiece, and the watch itself is also available in light grey, and soon in dark grey.
For ladies, Muji prepared the Bangle Watches line, named after the stylish bangle-style straps. The petite case with a prominent lug offers a choice of either white or black watch face, paired with the elegant strap available in 4 colors – red, white, brown and black. Again, we have a very simple dial, with basic functions. If you’re not a fan of round cases, how about a square? The Square Bangle watch has a similar design to its round cousin, but with a strap that doubles around the wrist, making a nice accessory. It comes in three different colored straps, and also in black or white dial.
2 Tone Watch in Khaki, besides the eponymous color scheme, features a peculiar 24 hour dial, with the part of numerals being positioned on the inner sub-dial. The timepiece vaguely resembles a military watch, but only when it comes to color. Otherwise, it’s similar to other watches by Muji in terms of specs.
Finally – stainless steel! The round timepiece in this material comes with a charcoal watch face, and the dial features a date display. Pretty complicated feature for a company that prides itself in minimalism, but have no fear – the absence of numerals keeps everything nice and simple. The 35 mm case looks very nice and is completed with a matching-color strap. The stainless steel gives a very rugged appeal to this watch, which sets it apart from other Muji timepieces. Simple never looked better!
