New World Only: Richard Mille RM 030 Americas Limited Edition

Swiss luxury watch maker Richard Mille has recently presented a special version of their RM 030 timepiece, the RM 030 Americas Limited Edition. As it is implied in the name, the timepiece will be available in a limited collection. Only 30 of them, that is, and they will only be available in North and South America. Visually, what makes this watch different than other RM 030 timepieces are the orange details found on the upper flange, hands, as well as the crown protector.

If you’re familiar with the design of Richard Mille watches, you’ll easily recognize the shape of the case of this watch. The classic RM tonneau case measuring 50 x 42.70 mm, while the thickness of it is not-quite-slender 13.95 mm. The case itself is made of black carbon nanotubes, which gives the watch a very sporty and a bit futuristic look. On the front of the case, again we have a familiar design, the twelve screws placed around the bezel.

Nifty winding indicator and a lot more can be found on the dial

The transparent dial gives the wearer a look at the movement of the watch, as well providing the usual information. We have the aforementioned orange upper flange, which nicely contrasts the black color of the case. The same color is present on the hour and minute hands, as well as on the tip of the second hand. Other additions on the dial include the date indicator, located at 7 o’clock position, surrounded by white border. And that’s not all: at a slightly off-centered position, you’ll notice a special indicator for winding, and finally at 9 o’clock position there’s the power reserve indicator, which tells the wearer how many of the 55 hours of power reserve is left.

The watch uses the Calibre RMAR1, which is an automatic movement with declutchable rotor. Namely, the rotor, which is part of the specially developed gear system, declutches automatically when the spring is completely wound. The power reserve of the movement is 55 hours, shown on the dial, but there’s also one interesting thing about it. Once the power reserve falls to 40 hours, the movement’s rotor is automatically clutched. What happens next is that the watch performs the winding phase until the power reserve is back to 50 hours. This is a very nifty feature and you can see on the dial if the whole process is happening or not.

Calibre RMAR1

The movement features free sprung balance with variable inertia, and it’s also equipped with double barrels. The balance itself is a 4-arm one, and it’s made of Glucydur. There’s also quite a bit of titanium here; found on bridges, baseplate and the balance cock, all made form grade 5 titanium and wet sandblasted. As for the aesthetics, the surfaces of the movement were all hand-drawn, which is certainly nice to know. Finally, we have the strap. The RM 030 Americas Limited Edition is completed with a stylish black rubber strap, which nicely complements the whole watch and gives it a sporty feel.
