Oris has just launched a new aviation-inspired watch – the Big Crown D.26 286 HB-RAG. Inspired by the historic Dewoitine D.26 aircraft, the latest timepiece marks the beginning of a new partnership between Oris and ” Hangar 31″, a Swiss aviation association that preserves and flies one of the two remaining Dewoitine D.26 aircrafts from its base in the town of Grenchen. Throughout the years, Oris has worked with numerous non-profit organizations dedicated to conserving aviation heritage. Speaking on the new partnership, Oris’ chairman Ulrich W. Herzog said that the brand is happy to support the preserving of such a historically significant aircraft.

Named after its designer, the French engineer Emile Dewoitine, the Dewoitine D.26 was a military trainer aircraft developed in Switzerland for the Swiss Air Force. Eleven models were commissioned by the Swiss government and build by Eidgenoessische Konstruktionswerkstaette (Federal Constructions Works) factory in Thun. Today, only two of them are in working condition: the number 286, based in Grenchen, and the number 284, based in Lausanne. The Dewoitine D.26 286 HB-RAG was first put into service on August 20, 1931. After it was decommissioned from the Swiss Air Force in 1948, it was used to tow glider aircraft into the air in Zurich, Sion, and Lausanne. For years the aircraft was neglected, until it was restored and then displayed in a museum in Dübendorf, near Zurich. Two years ago, the Dewoitine D.26 286 HB-RAG was acquired by the Hangar 31. The organization maintains it and regularly flies it, continuing its historic story.

Based on the original 1938 Big Crown, the new Oris Big Crown D.26 286 HB-RAG is housed in a 40mm stainless steel case. The case is water resistant to 50 meters and features screw-in stainless steel crown, fluted bezel, and screwed stainless steel case back. The latter is embossed with an image of the D.26 286 HB-RAG plane and engraved with limited edition number. Beneath the double AR-coated sapphire crystal is a highly legible green dial with printed Arabic numerals and polished nickel hands. The dial displays hours, minutes, seconds and date. The latter is displayed with a red-tipped central hand pointing to a 31-day scale around the edge of the dial. Now Oris’s signature complication, the pointer date was also present on the original Big Crown model.

Ticking inside the watch is the self-winding Oris caliber 754 with 26 jewels. The Sellita SW200-1 based movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. Completing this beautiful aviation-inspired timepiece we have a brown leather strap with stainless steel pin buckle. The watch is presented in a special leather pouch with additional brown leather strap. Both straps, as well as the pouch, are inspired by the leather found in the D.26’s cockpit. Available at authorized retailers, the Oris Big Crown D.26 286 HB-RAG is issued in a limited edition of 1,931 pieces. The timepiece is priced at CHF 1,850.
