At this year’s Baselworld, one of the more talked about subjects was Oris’ new Big Crown Pointer Date collection. First launched in the 1980’s, the Big Crown Pointer Date is one of the brand’s most iconic timepieces. With its smooth, round case, coin-edged bezel, oversized crown, and a legible dial with the signature central pointer hand indicating the date, it symbolizes Oris’ long and proud aviation heritage. The company first re-introduced this watch in 2017 with the Big Crown D.26 286 HB-RAG limited edition. For this year, Oris has prepared three non-limited reissues: two in steel and one in bronze.

Big Crown Pointer Date is one of Oris’s most recognized designs

Available in different materials, dials and diameters, the new Oris Big Crown Pointer Date models are modern watches designed to appeal to a new generation of stylish, urbane men and women. Compared to the original model, the new versions feature slimmer, smoother cases that can more easily be slipped onto the wrist and under a cuff. To give the watches a both modern and retro feel, the brand’s designers have equipped them with a bubble-curved sapphire crystal.

The steel Big Crown Pointer Date is available in two sizes: 36mm (ref. 01 754 7749 4064 / 4067 MB) and 40mm (ref. 01 754 7741 4064 / 4065 LS). Each model is water resistant to 50 meters and features a highly legible dial with printed Arabic numerals, railway-type minute track, and the pointer date hand. The 40mm version features a grey-blue dial while the smaller model has a light green dial. According to Oris, these particular shades are inspired by the colors from Le Corbusier‘s Architectural Polychromy. Each watch is also available with a black dial. The steel Big Crown Pointer Date models are available with naturally tanned leather straps and a stainless steel bracelet. The models on straps retail for CHF 1,550, while the all-steel versions are priced at CHF 1,750.

Housed in a 36mm case, the bronze Big Crown Pointer Date (ref. No. 01 754 7749 3167 LS) can withstand depths of up to 50 meters. The brand intentionally chose this material for its dynamic qualities. When exposed to air and moisture over time, bronze acquires a unique patina that reflects the wearer’s lifestyle. This model comes with the same light green dial as on the 36mm steel Big Crown Pointer Date. The hours, minutes, seconds and date are all indicated via polished rose gold-plated hands. The watch is presented on a retro-looking naturally tanned light brown leather strap. The bronze Big Crown Pointer Date is priced at CHF 1,800.

In keeping with its tradition, Oris has equipped the new Big Crown Pointer Date models with a Swiss Made automatic movement. The watches are powered by the caliber 754. Based on Sellita SW 200-1, this movement oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) and guarantees a power reserve of no less than 38 hours. On the back of each model there is a transparent case back which shows the movement in action.
