Michel Parmigiani, the founder of Parmigiani Fleurier, has always been fascinated by astronomy and how it influences our daily lives. In his honor, the Swiss brand has developed the new Tonda Annual Calendar – a timepiece wholly devoted to this amazing science. The latest Parmigiani Fleurier watch combines both the annual and lunar calendars on the same dial. Its retrograde annual calendar and moon phase complications transcribe the rotation of the Earth in relation to both the sun and the moon.

This is not the first time Parmigiani Fleurier has incorporated the retrograde annual calendar into one of its watches. In 2011, the highly prized complication debuted with the Tonda Quator. What makes the retrograde annual calendar so special is the fact that the wearer maintains a point of contact with the watch each year. The date here is automatically adjusted based on the number of days in a month, 30 or 31. However, the mechanism works on the assumption that every February has 29 days, whether it is a leap year or not. This means that once a year, or rather, three times every four years, at the end of February, the wearer of the Tonda Annual Calendar must remove the watch from his or her wrist and set the date manually.

Complementing the calendar indications is the moon phase complication. The latter is known as a “precision moon phase” because it is so accurate it only requires one correction every 122 years. This adjustment is necessary to compensate the difference between a classic and the actual lunar cycle. The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Annual Calendar features two representations of the moon as viewed from both hemispheres. The moon counter and the red gold moon discs are positioned against a mesmerizing aventurine glass sky that recall the beauty of a galaxy full of twinkling stars.

The new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Annual Calendar comes in two editions: rose gold a white grained dial and white gold with a black opaline dial. Both watches are 40mm wide and water resistant to 30 meters. On the back of each model there is a transparent sapphire caseback. Although busy-looking, the dials are very legible. The dials themselves are made in several layers which create relief and add richness. The minute track and hour markers are positioned on the perimeter, creating a floating effect and enabling highly accurate time reading. The days and months are displayed 9 and 3 respectively while the moon phase indication sits at 6 o’clock. The retrograde date indication runs from 8 to 4 o’clock.

The sapphire caseback reveals an intricately-decorated movement

For its latest creation, Parmigiani Fleurier developed the new calibre PF339. Visible through the sapphire caseback, this double-barrel movement features Côtes de Genève bridges and an oscillating weight decorated with guilloché barley grain motif. The self-winding movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 50 hours. Completing the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Annual Calendar is a stylish black Hermès alligator leather strap with rose/white gold folding buckle.
