Patek Philippe celebrates 50 years of the Golden Ellipse with two new models

Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 1

Introduced in 1968, the Golden Ellipse is Patek Philippe’s second oldest watch. A timepiece that has survived decades of constantly changing trends, the Golden Ellipse is characterized by its bold elliptical case. The case itself is a mix between a circle and rectangle and features proportions inspired by a mathematical principle called the golden ratio. Discovered by mathematicians in ancient Greece, it is used to define the perfect proportions  of an object. Expressed as a ratio of 1:1.6180339887…, this principle has been the formula on which numerous architectural and artistic masterpieces have been based. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Golden Ellipse collection, Patek Philippe is releasing two new models: a limited edition in platinum (ref. 5738/50P-001), and a non-limited edition in rose gold (ref. 5738R-001).

Limited to 100 pieces, the new Golden Ellipse ref. 5738/50P-001 in platinum was made with the help of several specialists from Patek Philippe’s Rare Handcrafts division. Featuring a black enamel background, the dial is decorated with a volute pattern manually engraved in the 18K white gold plate. Its centre is adorned with a motif evocative of the brand’s Calatrava cross logo. A result of many hours of work, the dial decoration perfectly complements the smooth contours of the case and highlights the harmony of the golden ratio. Completing the dial we have two white gold hands indicating hours and minutes.

Located at 3 o’clock is the winding crown set with an onyx cabochon matching the color of the dial. At 6 o’clock the caseband is decorated with a set of diamonds – a signature feature of every platinum Patek Philippe watch. Ticking inside the timepiece is the Caliber 240 with 27 jewels.
