Seventy years ago, Porsche launched the iconic 356, its very first sports car. The 356 was an immediate success, putting the German manufacturer on the map as a leader in the sports car segment. The car was produced until 1965, two years after Porsche introduced its successor, the legendary 911. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the 356, Porsche’s lifestyle brand Porsche Design is introducing a very special timepiece – the 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car Limited Edition. Elegant and minimalist, this anniversary model perfectly complements the exclusive 1919 collection which is inspired by the clean design and aesthetics of the Porsche 911. Limited to 1948 pieces, the watch is now available at Porsche Design Stores, Porsche Centers, specialty retailers, and online through the brand’s website. The retail price is $3,248.

Limited edition of 1948 pieces – a nod to the birth date of Porsche as we know it today

Since its foundation in 1972, Porsche Design has always used innovative designs and materials. Timepieces like the 1972 Chronograph I (the world’s first entirely black men’s watch) and the 1980 Titanium Chronograph (the world’s first titanium wristwatch) have contributed to shaping the image of exclusive watches. The brand has applied the same principle on the new Porsche Design 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car Limited Edition. The watch’s 42mm case is made of titanium and entirely covered with a black carbide coating which gives it a cool matte black finish. The timepiece is water resistant to 100 meters and has a screw down crown and solid screw down case back. The latter is engraved with a special “70 years” logo engraving, the 1948-2018 dates and a limited edition number. Like every model in the 1919 collection, the 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car Limited Edition features a case with elegant hollowed lugs. These not only save weight but also create an interesting visual lightness.

The case is smooth and elegant, but the main focus of this watch is its minimalist black dial. Featuring grey accents, it takes inspiration from the dashboard of the iconic Porsche 356. The dial is decorated with the silhouette of the car and the year 1948, both positioned at 6 o’clock. The ceramic hour markers and numerals are “connected” with grey lines – a nod to the tachometer rings used on the dashboard of the iconic Porsche 356. The dial itself is very clean and straightforward, displaying only hours, minutes, seconds and date at 3 o’clock. The date window features a black background so not to “ruin” the dial’s minimal design.

Powering the Porsche Design 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car Limited Edition is well known Sellita SW200-1 with 26 jewels. This self-winding Swiss movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. The movement also features a customized Porsche Design winding rotor. The brand’s latest watch comes on a sporty black calfskin strap with black stitching and black folding clasp. The leather used for this strap is the same as the one Porsche uses for their car seats. The new 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car Limited Edition is delivered in a custom presentation box with a special limitation badge.
