About two years ago we brought you a story about Oris’s Carl Brashear Limited Edition – a bronze watch dedicated to the U.S. Navy’s first African American and first amputee Master Diver. Carl Brashear was one of the most inspirational figures of the 20th century, defying racial stereotypes, disability and history. His life and incredible achievements were portrayed in the 2000 movie Men of Honour. In the film he was portrayed by an acclaimed Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. Now in 2018, Oris is proud to announce its second limited edition bronze watch celebrating Carl Brashear’s legacy – the Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition (ref. 01 771 7744 3185). Limited to 2,000 pieces, the watch is now available at the brand’s boutiques and authorized Oris retailers. The timepiece is priced at CHF 4,700.

Speaking about the brand’s latest watch, Oris Chairman Ulrich W. Herzog said that the brand is proud to be working with the Carl Brashear Foundation once again. A highly inspirational human being, Mr. Brashear brought significant change in his lifetime. At Oris, their mission is to bring #ChangeForTheBetter. Just like the first edition, the new Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition is also based on the acclaimed Oris Divers Sixty-Five watch. The independent watchmaker has once again chosen to work with bronze, a material that represents the early diving equipment Brashear used. Interestingly, the two Carl Brashear editions are the only Oris watches to be made of bronze. Featuring a soft, natural warmth, bronze ages over time, developing a unique patina that reflects the habits and lifestyle of the wearer.

For its latest watch, Oris has chosen a chronograph complication. This function is symbolic of the numerous times Carl Brashear was stopped in life, but always kept going. The Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition is 43mm wide and water resistant to 100 meters. On the back of the watch there is a screwed stainless steel case back embossed with a diver’s helmet and Carl Brashear’s iconic quote “It’s not a sin to get knocked down, it’s a sin to stay down”. Underneath the AR-coated bubble-curved sapphire crystal lies an attractive dark blue curved dial with rose gold-plated indices and hands. Evocative of the deep water into which Brashear dived so often, the dial features the symmetrical bicompax layout. The small seconds are displayed at 9 while the subdial at 3 o’clock features a 30-minute chronograph counter. This dial configuration gives the timepiece its classic, timeless chronograph look.

The new Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition is powered by the caliber 771. Based on Sellita SW 510, this self-winding chronograph movement has never appeared in an Oris watch before. The movement itself oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. The watch comes on a stylish brown leather strap with bronze pin buckle. It is presented in a special wooden box containing additional stainless steel pin buckle and commemorative coin issued by Carl Brashear Foundation.
