Slender beauty: Piaget Emperador Coussin Automatic Minute Repeater

They’ve done it again; the horology experts from Piaget have prepared another thin movement, this time for the upcoming Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie. The Emperador Coussin Automatic Minute Repeater boasts a super-slender Caliber 1290P, the world’s thinnest minute repeater movement. At just 4.8 mm thickness, this movement represents a great piece of engineering packed in an aesthetically pleasing case.

First things first: the caliber. It has a power reserve of 40 hours, and it’s actually based on the company’s Caliber 1200P, the world’s thinnest automatic movement. The horological masters from Piaget managed to squeeze in 407 parts into it, making this watch truly admirable. From development to assembly, the 1290P is a complete product of the Piaget manufacture in La Côte-aux-Fées, and you’re reminded of that fact when you look at the dial, where there is an inscription testifying to the fact. The dial itself is actually very simple – apart from the hour indexes, there is no particular watch face. Instead, the sapphire crystal let’s you see into all the intricacies of the movement. The crystal is also on the back, where one is greeted with the meticulously done decorations.

Some components measure as little as 0.07 mm!

But let’s go back to the movement. Can’t get enough of that, can we? Did you know that Minute Repeaters are one of the most difficult complications to produce? It took Piaget three years to make develop this caliber, with six engineers dedicated themselves specifically to this project. Extreme thinness and the inclusion of automatic winding mechanism made things even more challenging, but the company successfully managed to do it all.

The Minute Repeater is activated via slide at the left side of the watch, next to 9’o clock position. Once it’s activated, vibrations of a gong struck by hammers create a distinct sound, chiming at 64 decibels. An inertia flywheel regulates the rhythm between the start and finish of the chiming. The transmission of the sound has been engineered so as to achieve the best resonance, thanks to the much hollowed case.

Another look at the mechanism from the back

The case diameter measures staggering 48 mm, and is made of 18 carat rose gold. If you’re wondering whether case thickness keeps up with that of the movement – it does. 9.4 mm nicely suits the big case diameter, and overall makes the watch look very stylish and elegant. The pure, polished surfaces of the case nicely contrast the movement, and together they leave a very nice visual impression. Despite the rounds shape of the case, the inside has been shaped like a cushion, to host the movement.

The Piaget Emperador Coussin Automatic Minute Repeater is equipped with a brown alligator leather strap, which nicely matches the style and elegance of rose gold. Brown leather and rose gold are such a common combination, so it doesn’t really come as a surprise that Piaget decided to use the same color pattern. To ensure this delicate beauty is not damaged by water, the watch has a decent water resistance of 3 ATM – certainly not something to be excited about, but quite enough for everyday use. But who cares about that when you have the thinnest Minute Repeater in the world! I know I wouldn’t.
