The Commander Big Date – 100 years of Mido

Mido Commander Big Date

Established on 11 November 1918, on the same day as the WWI armistice, Mido will be 100 years old next year! Founded by Mr. Georges Schaeren, an experienced and ingenious Swiss watchmaker, the brand is today based in the town of Le Locle in the heart of the Swiss Jura mountains. The word Mido comes from the Spanish phrase Yo mido meaning “I measure”. Since its beginnings, the company’s philosophy has been based on quality materials, timeless design and technical innovation. These values have formed the brand’s DNA and made it a benchmark in Swiss-made mechanical watches.

The most eye-catching feature of each Commander Big Date timepiece is, of course, the big date complication. Located at 6 o’clock, the large polished and sandblasted date aperture offers unrivaled legibility and is one of the largest on the market in this price segment. For these four watches, Mido has modified its flagship movement – the caliber 80.

The 2018 Mido Commander Big Date watches offer a generous date display while simultaneously retaining the design codes that have made the Commander range such a success. Inspired by the architectural perfection of Eiffel Tower, the collection has been produced by Mido without interruption since 1959. And just as the Paris’ iconic monument, it has become a true icon, representing Swiss watchmaking tradition and expertise. Like models in the collection, the new watches have beautiful, extremely pure satin-finished dials. The dials feature applied polished indexes and flat diamond-cut, hour and minute hands. For better readability at night, the hands and indexes are filled with white Super-LumiNova.

Another “trademark” feature of every Commander watch is an elegant round case with polished bezel. The cases on the latest Commander Big Date models are all 42mm wide. The 3-piece cases are water resistant to a pressure of 5 bars (50m or 165ft) and feature a screwed transparent case back. Looking through the sapphire back, one can admire the finely decorated caliber 80. The oscillating weight is decorated with Geneva stripes and Mido logo. Featuring 25 jewels, the self-winding movement is equipped with highly innovative ELINFLEX mainspring and ELINCHRON II balance-spring. The caliber 80 beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and enables a power reserve of up to 80 hours. The two all-steel models are priced at CHF 940 each while the two-tone and rose PVD-treated stainless steel watches will retail at CHF 1,050 and CHF 990 respectively.
