Vulcain 50s Presidents’ Chronograph & Chronograph Heritage – a tribute to a sporting past

Back in 1934, Spanish football club Real Madrid won the national championship – and with help from one Vulcain watch! The coach Francisco Bru said in a letter he wrote to Vulcain: “Our training sessions, calculated using an incredible chronometer-precision Vulcain watch, have led us to our decisive win in the 1934 Spanish Championship”. That same year, the team won the Spanish Football Cup as well.  Now, almost 80 years later, Vulcain decided to pay tribute to its connection with sport by releasing the 50s Presidents’ Chronograph Heritage timepiece.

The Heritage is actually a re-edition of the vintage model, and comes in a contemporary 42 mm size. Made out of 316L steel, the case houses the Calibre Vulcain V-57 mechanical movement with a power reserve of 42 hours. Besides the standard hour and minutes function, the functions include a seconds counters at 9 o’clock and a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock. But probably the most interesting of them all is the pulsometric scale located at the center of the dial; you’ll easily notice it with its inscription “Gradué pour 30 pulsations” (graduated for 30 heartbeats).

Stainless steel version

Style-wise, the watch echoes the design of the original watch, especially so on the dial which comes in three different versions: black with brown transfer, “eggshell” white with black transfer and silver-toned with blue transfer. Even the font for the logo and numerals is the same as the vintage timepiece, which nicely complements the style of the contemporary. As for the strap, Vulcain paired the Heritage with the Louisiana Alligator leather strap, completed with a steel pin buckle. Finally, the tough and rugged aspect hasn’t been neglected – the watch is well protected on the dial by a dome shaped sapphire crystal (the crystal is also on the back), while the water resistance is sufficient 50 meters.

But the Heritage is not the only new timepiece from Vulcain. The company also presented an exclusive new range of self winding single-pusher chronographs: the 50s Presidents’ Chronograph. And as its name suggests, the timepiece highlights chronograph feature, and the watch itself is inspired by the watch that became a favorite with the coaches of the Real Madrid football club. The Chronograph offers slightly simpler design that the Heritage, and comes in two versions. Buyers can choose between charcoal grey, silver or blue sunray dial with rhodium indexes.

No fancy pulsometric scale here, just good old chronograph - 50s Presidents’ Chronograph collection

Same-sized 42 mm steel case houses the Calibre Vulcain V-57 mechanical automatic unidirectional movement, with 42 hours of power reserve. As for the water resistance, it’s also 50 meters, which should be more than plenty for everyday use. As for the strap, there’s the Louisiana Alligator leather strap, available in brown or black, with a steel pin buckle.

Visually, the Chronograph isn’t much different that the Heritage. The latter emphasizes the vintage feel just a bit more, but both timepieces are certainly exceptional creations. Maybe you won’t coach a team to victory, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying one of these timepieces. Now you can own a piece of sporting history, packed in stylish creation. Sounds great!
