In January 2017, watchmaking world lost one of its great ones – Mister Walter Lange. Born in 1924 in Dresden, Walter was a great grandson of Ferdinand Adolph Lange, who founded A. Lange & Söhne on 7 December 1845. In 1990, one year after the fall of the Berlin Wall and 42 years after the nationalization of the company, he and Günter Blümlein (the then managing director of LMH) resurrected A. Lange & Söhne and once again made Glashütte the centre of the German watch industry. In 1994, the re-founded company introduced its first watches. In honor of its founder, A. Lange & Söhne has launched a very special new watch – the 1815 “Homage To Walter Lange”.

What makes the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 “Homage To Walter Lange” really special is the use of a stoppable jumping seconds hand. In addition to the small seconds hand, which advances from second to second in 6 steps (due to the 3Hz movement) , the watch also features a central seconds hand that makes one jump per second. Using a pusher at 2 o’clock, the wearer can start or stop this hand. This extraordinary and highly useful complication is of great significance for the German brand as it was conceived by Ferdinand Adolph Lange himself back in 1867. It was first implemented in 1877, in a watch created by Walter Lange’s grandfather, Emil Lange. In the new 1815 “Homage To Walter Lange”, the jump of the seconds hand is controlled by the very same principle as in the original 1867 mechanism.

The central seconds hand can be activated or deactivated by pushing the 2 o’clock button

The new A. Lange & Söhne 1815 “Homage To Walter Lange” comes in three precious-metal editions: 27 in yellow gold 90 in pink gold, and 145 white gold. Of course, these are not just some randomly chosen numbers. Walter Lange re-founded A. Lange & Söhne on December 7th, 1990, 145 years from the day his great grandfather established the company. Also, 27 years have passed between 1990 and 2017. In addition to these gold models, the German brand has also produced a unique piece in stainless steel. This special model will be auctioned off for a charitable purpose in 2018. Always noted for his philanthropy, Walter Lange would have certainly approved of this.

Unlike the gold models (silver dials), the stainless steel version features a black enamel dial

Each A. Lange & Söhne 1815 “Homage To Walter Lange” model is 40.5mm wide and has a transparent sapphire case back. The gold models feature silver dials with blued-steel hands while the steel version has a black enamel dial with polished stainless steel hands. The dial layout is the same on each model. The timepieces are powered by the caliber L1924 – the number 1924, of course, being a reference to Walter Lange’s birth year. This manually wound movement beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 60 hours. The yellow gold and pink gold model are presented on an alligator leather strap in light brown and dark brown respectively, while the white gold and steel model both feature a black alligator leather strap. The gold models are priced at €47,000 each.
