A Pair of Flying Tourbillons

If you ever thought watches for men tend to be slightly more conservative looking then ones for women this may change your mind.  The French watch house Rotonde de Cartier has developed this intriguing timepiece for the male connoisseurs to enjoy. The piece will be presented at the SIHH watch event in Geneva, starting from January 16th the following year.

A little amphitheater on your wrist

The design of the watch is unusual to say the least. There is no dial as we are used to. Instead, we have a miniature Roman amphitheater on the wrist. In fact, the huge Roman numerals on the bezel form the “walls” of the amphitheater and within the arena we find blue hands and the movement which already became the trademark of Rotonde de Cartier – the flying tourbillon operating as the seconds indicator. But as nothing is plain about this model, the bezel doesn’t have the standard circular shape, but we only have numerals from six to twelve as the bezel is placed under a certain angle. The whole thing is skillfully handmade in 18-carat white gold dial.

The dial is quite big in diameter – around 46 mm. The mechanism itself is 39 mm (19 jewels and 167 components while we are speaking of numbers). The sapphire dial crystal and case back will keep the watch safe from scratches, and the 30 meter water resistance is enough to preserve it from light rain or sweat.

The Love Tourbillon may, in spite of all the mentioned design innovations, seem somehow familiar. This is because the flying tourbillon – a complication mastered by the meticulous craftsman from Rotonde de Cartier. Let me remind you of the Cartier Tourbillon and Crocodile Calibre 9458 MC which even has the same blue hands.

Notice that both the female and the male watch bear the typical Cartier crown, but the male one has the cherry on top – a beautiful (that is handsome) cabochon sapphire. The crown is the mutual feature of another piece from this watch house, and the one that will be the female companion of the Love Tourbillon at SIHH – the Masse Secréte

Now that's a lot of diamonds!

A profusion of diamonds from Cartier

The atypical feature of this timepiece is the prominent diamond sprayed panther, which is in fact the rotor. This enables the panther to travel across the black mother-of-pearl dial. Cartier spent an abundance of diamonds when it comes to this piece, covering the bezel, the case and even the buckle surface with white diamonds. The only thing which might be irritating is when the dials come into a position when covered by the panther. Perhaps this watch was intended to simply be worn as a fashion detail, rather than a time telling machine. I suppose the ladies won’t have a problem with that! :)

There they are, the couple that will walk the red carpet at SIHH 2012 on behalf of Rotonde de Cartier. She sparkles under the flashing lights while he bears utmost elegance. How successful will they be at the watch fair, remains to be seen.

I never took a particular liking to Cartier, but that tourby is pretty damn cool.
