Armin Strom Manual Hunt Slonem Edition for Only Watch 2017

On Saturday November 11 2017, all eyes of the watchmaking world will be on the Only Watch auction. The 2017 edition will be hosted by Christie’s at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues in Geneva. With a record number of 48 participants, the organizers are expecting to surpass last year’s figure of $11,204,707. Among the brands participating in this year’s charity event will also be the Swiss watchmaker Armin Strom with its latest masterpiece: the Manual Hunt Slonem Edition for Only Watch 2017. A piece that breaks the borders between art and watchmaking, the watch is a result of the collaboration between Armin Strom and American painter and artist American artist Hunt Slonem.

The future owner will also receive a hand-signed Hunt Slonem painting

Born in 1951, Hunt Slonem is an American, New-York based, painter, sculptor, and printmaker. Renowned for his vivid paintings of tropical birds and butterflies, he is considered an integral member of the Neo-Expressionist movement. In addition to the interpretations of birds, Hunt Slonem is also known for its iconic “bunny paintings” which he started creating in the early 1980’s. The idea for this series actually came to him when he discovered that his birth year is the year of the Rabbit in the Chinese zodiac calendar. Numerous international museums feature his work including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Brooklyn Museum of Art in Brooklyn, NY, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Many of his award-winning paintings are in collections of celebrities such as Sharon Stone, Julianne Moore, Brooke Shields, Kate Hudson, and Jennifer Lopez among others. For his work, he has received numerous awards and honors.

Serge Michel, an art enthusiast and the current owner of Armin Strom, has long been a fan of Hunt Slonem’s art. He was, therefore, more than delighted to establish a collaboration with the world-renowned New York artist. Both Serge and Hunt were particularly happy to dedicate their work to the Monaco foundation. The two expressed their happiness about being able to make a contribution to research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Now to the timepiece itself. A combination of modern Swiss watchmaking and Slonem’s expressive painting, the new Armin Strom Manual Hunt Slonem Edition for Only Watch 2017 features a 43.4 mm titanium case. The case is water resistant to 50 meters and has a transparent sapphire back. The unique dial of this model represents a “canvas” onto which Slonem’s modern art has been transferred. A mix of pastel hues and powerful lines, the transferred painting continues the artist’s acclaimed “bunny paintings” series. The dial itself is very simple, displaying only hours, minutes and small seconds at 9 o’clock. Inside the watch we have the caliber AMW11 – a 2.5 Hz manually wound movement with a remarkable power reserve of 120 hours. Completing the watch we have a stylish black alligator horn-back strap. There is also an additional black rubber strap. The winner of the auction for this piece will also receive a hand-signed Hunt Slonem painting which features the colors and motifs of the watch in a 46 cm x 31 cm format.
