The Detroit based brand Shinola is proud to announce a new timepiece in the Great American Series – the Jackie Robinson Limited Edition watch. Dedicated to the first African American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB), the latest Shinola timepiece comes as a limited edition of 442 pieces. The Jackie Robinson Limited Edition is priced at $1,500 and available now at the brand’s website and in Shinola stores. In addition to the watch, the company has also created a special mini baseball bat, baseball cap, baseball, and journal. Shinola will donate a portion of the profits to the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Established by Jackie’s wife Rachel in 1973, the non-profit organization provides scholarships to minority youths for higher education and preserves the legacy of the legendary Brooklyn Dodgers second baseman.
On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the baseball color line when Brooklyn Dodgers started him at first base. This event didn’t just have impact on baseball; it influenced the entire American culture. As a prominent black athlete, Jackie Robinson used his influence to promote equality for Americans and break color barriers in other spheres besides sport. In 1957, he became the first black vice president of a major company, the Chock full o’Nuts. Eight years later, he was appointed as a sports analyst for ABC – the first black television analyst. In the same year, Robinson played a significant role in founding of Harlem’s Freedom National Bank, New York City’s only black commercial bank. With his dignity, honor and philosophy of nonviolence, he greatly influenced the Civil Rights Movement and helped popularize it during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Today, seventy years after the historic baseball game, Jackie Robinson’s legacy continues to inspire and create change for people from all walks of life.
The Shinola Jackie Robinson Limited Edition watch is placed inside a 42mm polished stainless steel case. Water resistant to 50 meters, it features a solid steel caseback decorated with the number 42 – a reference to Robinson’s retired uniform number. The watch has a beautiful midnight blue dial with silver subdials. The dial displays hours, minutes, central chronograph seconds, small seconds at 3 and 30-minute/12-hour counter at 9 o’clock. The date is positioned at 6 o’clock. The brand’s logo is at 12 while the “Argonite-5020 DETROIT” inscription sits just above the date window.
Powering the Jackie Robinson Limited Edition watch is the Argonite 5020 movement. Assembled in the brand’s Detroit factory from Swiss and other imported parts, the highly-accurate quartz movement ensures split-second precision. Completing the timepiece we have a stylish chestnut alligator leather strap secured. Featuring blue lining, the leather strap is secured with a brushed stainless steel folding buckle measuring 18mm. The new Shinola Jackie Robinson Limited Edition watch comes in a special gift set packaged in a custom Jackie Robinson gift box, which includes a mini pennant, postcards, and a set of 3 pins. With the purchase of this limited-edition watch, the customers gain entry to the Foundry – the brand’s exclusive collector’s club created solely for owners of limited edition Shinola products.
