Jaquet Droz Enters the Dragon

The human fascination with all mythical beings is well-known and documented, and certainly with vast heritage of entire human race, there is so much to choose from. From all corners of the Earth, be it a mystical cradle of mankind, Africa or ancient mysterious Asia, stark, grim civilized Europe or misguidedly new world named America or unspoiled Australia, mythology is the fabric woven into the very foundations of our subconsciousness. If our dreams of contact with extraterrestrial intelligence ever come to fruition, mythology would be one of the proudest human achievements that we could offer to our future overlords. So wonderfully rich and eclectically diverse, there are a few entities that seem to span through overall mythology. Naga, draken, leviathan or widely recognized as the dragon is perhaps the most famous of those entities. There is no simple explanation why such beast is so comprehensively stamped in our psyche, but I’d put my money on a theory that once dragons weren’t all that mythical at all. However, with that said, there is one specific country that has long lasting relationship with the dragon, from elevated godlike status, to a position of domesticated animal. Lóng, as it is known in Chinese is one of the oldest incarnations of the dragon, and almost certainly, most revered. It is also one of the most popular motives watchmakers use when they’re trying to win over the shamelessly rich eastern market, with its yin counterpart, phoenix, being the close second.

Jaquet Droz claims there are more historical connections to this universally acclaimed scaly beast. Drawing upon the three centuries old tradition, Jaquet Droz seized the opportunity to celebrate the Chinese New Year a little early, but as they say: the early bird gets the worm. Of course, since you’ve already guessed 2012 is the Year of the Dragon, let us talk about the watch itself.
Unsurprisingly, Jaquet Droz used Petite Heure, its flagship model, as a canvas to paint this symbol of wealth and power. Using the formidable skill its enameling artisans and ample surface of the dial, two dragons were brought to life on the ivory background. What makes this piece so special and separate it from another of Jaquet Droz‘ fine watches, is the use of miniature gold flakes mixed with pigments. Unfortunately, the full effect could only be witnessed in person, but we must take Jaquet Droz‘ word when they claim the exquisite radiance emanating from the watch.
The gold 43 mm case is being home of the automatic double barrel calibre with 22k white gold weight, and 68 power reserve. Petite Heure Minute Dragon look is completed with hand-made brown alligator strap, and it will be available as the limited edition of 88 pieces.
