Laurent Ferrier and Urwerk present: the Arpal One unique watch

Laurent Ferrier and Urwerk. On one side you have classic traditional-looking watches like this, and on the other there are high-tech modern timepieces like this one. So, what could possibly connect these two vastly different worlds? The answer is the Only Watch. Organized under the patronage of HSH Albert II de Monaco since 2005, the Only Watch is a world-renowned charity auction of unique timepieces created by the finest watchmaking brands. Every two years, the biggest names in the business get together to raise funds for research into muscular dystrophy.

The Only Watch 2017 will take place in Geneva on 11 November 2017 and will gather a record number of 48 participants. For this year’s edition, the two watchmakers decided to produce a unique piece that’s neither a Laurent Ferrier watch nor an URWERK – the Arpal One. Featuring signature details from both manufacturers, the new watch offers a unique opportunity to witness two independent brands working together.

The first thing that catches one’s attention is the watch’s smooth polished case. Featuring perfect, almost aerodynamic, elegant curves, the case actually takes inspiration from Laurent Ferrier’s passion for cars. The watchmaker himself describes it as a “streamlined coachwork, fluid and without any affront to the eye”. But in order to create such a bold design, Laurent Ferrier and Urwerk had to use a special material. For that they turned to Biel based Cendres+Métaux company which specially for this watch re-developed their unique alloy called ARPAL+. This exclusive alloy consists of 75% precious metals and offers an improved water and scratch resistance over the “traditional” materials like white gold or steel. In addition to this, the ARPAL+ also possess a color that never fades, nor oxidizes. This remarkable material was firs implemented in the electronics industry where it is much appreciated for its incredible strength.

The new Arpal One by Laurent Ferrier and Urwerk is housed in a large 40.9 x 60.8 mm case. Water resistant to 30 meters, the case is entirely polished. The winding crown is positioned at 12 o’clock. Beneath the sapphire crystal glass is the Urwerk’s highly innovative time display. This original, intuitive way of telling the time features four satellites, each carrying three hours numerals, which successively sweep along the minutes scale. The satellites are in a matt pearly grey with diamond-polished outlines while the hours and minutes markers feature white SuperLuminova. Hiding the satellites that are not “active” in displaying the time is a cover made of polyetheretherketone, a thermoplastic known as PEEK.

Powering the Arpal One by Laurent Ferrier and Urwerk is the caliber UR5.03 with 52 jewels. Equipped with a double turbine to control the winding efficiency, this self-winding movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 48 hours. Completing this unique piece we have a stylish sand-colored leather strap hand stitched with matching thread. The strap is secured with a pin buckle matching the case.
