Pre-SIHH 2019: Parmigiani Fleurier Toric Capitole Rose Gold Brown

For the upcoming SIHH 2019, Parmigiani Fleurier has prepared a very special new model: the Toric Capitole Rose Gold Brown (ref. PFH476-1001300-HA1241). Featuring a “sector time display” and minute repeater, the latest Parmigiani Fleurier masterpiece represents a recreation of an early 1800’s pocket watch made by Perrin Frères, and now owned by the Sandoz Foundation (owner of Parmigiani Fleurier). Priced at whopping $390,000, the new Toric Capitole Rose Gold Brown is made as a unique piece.

Inspired by a 19th century mechanical masterpiece, the Toric Capitole Rose Gold Brown takes its name from the Capitolium in Rome, the religious and political heart of Ancient Rome. The geometrically spiraling floor tiles of this iconic building are reproduced in the pattern of the dial. According to Michel Parmigiani himself, the decoration is so captive because it based on the Golden Ratio. Looking at it, one can spot legendary Fibonacci’s spirals, displaying a harmony that is everywhere in nature. The dial decoration is hand engraved by a master artisan engraver who has left his lasting mark on the watch. The pattern itself is reminiscent of the arrangement of the scales on a pine cone – one of various examples of the Golden Ratio seen in the natural world.

Instead of a classic two/three hand display, Parmigiani Fleurier opted for the sector time display complication. Also called “wandering hours”, the indication features a rotary system comprised of three brown planetary discs with four arms, each end of which bears a white numeral to indicate the hour (1 to 12). The current hour travels along a brown track indicating the current minute. Positioned between 9 and 3 o’clock, this semi-circle features 60 white indexes, one for each minute.

Measuring 45mm in diameter, the new Parmigiani Fleurier Toric Capitole Rose Gold Brown a round rose gold case with characteristic gadroons and knurling. The watch is water resistant to 30 meters and has a transparent sapphire case back engraved with words “MODELE UNIQUE” and “REPETITION MINUTES”. On the left side of the case there is a slider that activates the minute repeater complication. The minute repeater features so-called “cathedral” gongs. Visible through the transparent case back, these gongs are coiled twice around the movement. This enhances the acoustic quality compared with a single set, but makes the watchmaker’s work on the case considerably more complex. The rose gold case has been specifically made to ensure the minute repeater chime acoustics are perfect, with the sound wave oscillating at the optimum frequencies inside the case.

Powering the latest Parmigiani Fleurier masterpiece is the in-house made caliber PF321 with 33 jewels and separate module for the minute repeater. Superbly finished (“Côtes de Genève” decoration, bevelled bridges), this manual-wound movement beats at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. The Toric Capitole Rose Gold Brown is presented on a stylish brown alligator leather strap. Made by Hermès, it is secured with a rose gold ardillon buckle.
