Richard Mille’s – RM 030 “Black Night”

A double feature! Back to back Richard Mille news. Just days after we presented the Limited edition “Dark Diver” Richard Mille already has something new for us. Today, under the spotlight, is a brand new Richard Mille 030 “Black Night” model. For all the fans of the previous RM 030 model this one will not disappoint either. Inspired by it’s close “relative” the RM 016 with the same nickname “Black Night“, this model delivers what most Richard Mille admirers have come to expect.

RM 030 case is made of a DLC treated titanium with a touch of contrasting red color.  Through it’s sapphire glass window and skeletonized dial you can see a part of it’s self winding movement. In general, automatic movements work by applying a small turning rotor witch is driven by it’s owner’s hand movement. To avoid over-winding (if owner is actively moving) Richard Mille’s craftsmen had to improve on the previous models  without affecting their accuracy. So when the watch is fully wound, the winding barrel is simply  disconnected from the rest of the mechanism saving it from over-winding. It took Richard Mille four years do develop this kind of a mechanism proving again their horological “street cred”. This self winding movement can provide energy to run the watch for about 55 hours on a full wind. A power reserve indicator placed on the dial will let the owner know how much “juice” is left. The movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour  (4 Hz) and also features an On/Off indicator showing when the self winding mechanism is active. A date calendar is interestingly, if unusually, placed in the 7 o’clock position. Rubber band strap with black DLC treated buckle goes together perfectly with the DLC treated titanium case. This timepiece is 50 meters water resistant so don’t take it swimming with you. Light rain or sprinkles however should not harm it.

Detail of "Black Night"

All in all, a solid showing from Richard Mille. The new overwinding protection feature puts it at a level above the previous models in terms of innovation, while the design aspect is as solid as we’ve come to expect from the company.

This amazing “Black Night” is limited to twenty five pieces only and will be sold in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Russia. We will have to wait for summer when the official release  is announced and when it will be available for sale. The price is something that remains to be seen, but something tells me that it will be one of those situations where if you have to ask….
