Romain Jerome – Liberty DNA

Romain Jerome, a newcomer trying to lay a claim to a piece of luxury watchmaking pie, has been giving us some pretty interesting timepieces since 2004. After Moon, Titanic and Eyjafjallajokull DNA collections this high end Swiss watchmaker company presented their brand new Liberty DNA collection. The reason for this new timepiece is the “birthday” of Lady Liberty herself. More precisely, the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. This special occasion deserves a special birthday present and Romain Jerome unveiled the new collection on the 4th of July, the independence day. Collaborating with Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation and Gold Leaf Corporation this model managed to d continue on the path set by Romain Jerome’s previous timepieces. The Statue of Liberty (designed by Frederic Bartholdi) was a gift from people of France and it represents Libertas, Roman goddess of freedom. With torch in one hand and tabula ansata (with 4th July, 1776 written on it) in other. Personifying freedom and liberty of people of United States ever since.

The case of the watch is actually made from a piece of Statue of Liberty and measures 46 millimeters in diameter. Dial is designed to look like oxidized copper representing the Statue today. Self winding movement (Caliber RJ001-a) is working at 28,800 vibrations per hour and it contains 23 jewels. The case of the watch is designed to resemble the crown on the head of Statue of Liberty and twelve pieces of the crown are also used to help you tell time. “Crown” bezel is made of bronze and it perfectly circles the entire 19th century look of the watch. Case of the watch is made of black PVD-coated steel and it has the power reserve of up to 42 hours. And like the famous Statue herself has an engraving that reads “Liberty Enlightening the World”. The back side of the timepiece is engraved as well showing the flame of liberty lighting the stars and stripes of the flag of the United States of America. And what could possibly go better with this watch than vintage brown alligator leather strap? The dial of the watch is decorated with initials of Romain Jerome and on the bottom of the watch is the name of the collection – “Liberty – DNA“.

This amazing time telling device is limited edition and it is made in 125 pieces only. The price of the watch is 14,900 $.

So what do you think of this latest entry from Romain Jerome? They seem to be on a roll, creating pieces that somehow incorporate some of the most iconic objects on the planet. Plenty of those still around so we can probably look forward to being surprised by new ones. I have some ideas myself, but probably not as cool as their previous Apollo 11 inspired piece that contained both a piece of Apollo 11 AND some moon dust. That’s hard to beat! Does the Libery DNA come close?
