From July 13 to 23, 2017, the city of New York will be the host of a public exhibition called “The Art of Watches Grand Exhibition New York”. The 11-day event will take place at Cipriani 42nd Street and will be free of admission. For this occasion, Patek Philippe has created a two-story structure featuring 10 specific rooms such as the Current Collection Room, US Historic Room, Museum Room and others. There the visitors will have a unique opportunity to see in person some of the most iconic pieces from the brand’s rich history. Particularly interesting will be the US Historic Room which will feature a number of historic Patek’s owned by such iconic American figures like Joe DiMaggio, Duke Ellington and John F. Kennedy!

In addition to presenting its historic models (some even go back to 16th century!), the legendary Swiss manufacture will also be introducing some new watches. For the occassion of “The Art of Watches Grand Exhibition New York”, Patek Philippe created nine limited editions of men’s and ladies’ watches that highlight the brand’s great watchmaking expertise. These special pieces showcase remarkable artisan skills and are adorned with motifs that pay homage to the city of New York and the United States of America. In this article we will be focusing on one of the most interesting (and certainly most affordable :) ) new release: the Patek Philippe Pilot Calatrava Ref. 5522A. And yes, in case you were wondering, the “A” stands for “acier” (French for steel). The new Pilot Calatrava Ref. 5522A is issued as a limited edition of 600 pieces. Priced at $21,547, the watch will be sold exclusively through Patek Philippe’s network of 89 US retailers.

The new Patek Philippe Pilot Calatrava Ref. 5522A has a 42 mm stainless steel case. The case is water resistant to 60 meters and features a transparent sapphire back decorated with the engraving “PATEK PHILIPPE NEW YORK 2017″. The watch features a beautiful deep blue lacquered brass dial evocative of vintage Patek Philippe aviator’s watches. The color itself is reminiscent of the 1930’s American fighter planes. The design of the dial is simple, straightforward and highly legible. The dial features large white gold Arabic numerals, blued steel baton hour and minute hands, and an aluminum central seconds hand. All numerals and hands are coated with luminous material. Completing the dial we have the Patek Philippe logo in the middle and a white railway-type minute track running around the edge.

Inside the Patek Philippe Pilot Calatrava Ref. 5522A is the caliber 324 S with 29 jewels. Visible through the sapphire back, this exceptional self-winding caliber is equipped with several innovative features such as the Gyromax balance and Spiromax balance spring. The movement itself beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of no less than 45 hours. The new Pilot Calatrava Ref. 5522A is delivered on a stylish vintage-looking brown calfskin strap with contrast stitching. The strap is secured with a stainless steel clevis prong buckle which is, according to Patek Philippe, designed to resemble the belt buckles that pilots used to secure their survival kits.
