Watches are like wine – the older, the better

Do not be deceived by the looks of this watch. Yes it looks old, and yes it looks unusual (more like a wall calendar at first glance), but it is still one of the most searched for watches, and one of the most expensive as a matter of fact.

The watch originates from around the 1970’s, from the Wittnauer watch collection. The founder of this watch house wanted a brand to suit the fast-growing U.S. market. Thus he combined what later proved to be an instant success – low prices and the utmost quality of Swiss made watches. But if you try to find the Wittnauer watch company now, you will be redirected to the Bulova Corporation, as the two renowned watchmaking industries conjoined in 2001.

This vintage watch still stands for one of the best retrograde watches. And it is in fact a double-retrograde as you can see. Both the hours and the minutes hand are jumping hands – they jump to the beginning after a whole hour (in the case of the minutes)/ 12 hours (when it comes to the hours indicator). This is made possible due to a not so complicated mechanism when you think about it. As you can see in the pictures below, the mechanism is based on levers and rotating disks. When the lever arrives at the end of the disk (top picture), it automatically swirls back to the initial position.

When the lever comes to the end of the disk...

The two most wanted watches of the seventies were precisely the two variants Wittnauer Sector Futurama 1000. The two models were different only in regards to the dial color, one being black and the other silver. Both feature double-retrograde time displays, a magnifying date window by the six o’clock numeral, and the automatic winding Swiss mechanism. Even though it is not typical, the display is perfectly legible when you get used to it.

I am not familiar with the current price, but the watch is said to be one, if not the, most expensive retrograde watches on the market. But, if you want to brag with this one, you should be aware that value and quality of this timepiece will probably be evident only to a true discerning eye of a watch connoisseur. So you really don’t need to have diamonds all over your watch to make it a sign of prestige. And as a rule rather than exception, vintage watches are like wine – the older the better.

The Futurama 1000 really does look like your grandfather’s clock, but I think that is really the beauty of it. It looks highly elegant on the wrist due to its classical gold bracelet and case and just slightly unusual dial. For people who want a true oddity which you most certainly won’t see everybody wearing in, this certainly is a very appealing choice.
